Camera work reflection

We learned how to use a variety of techniques that are necessary for good camera work, this involves a combination of different camera angles and camera shots. The way a camera is angled, positioned, held, moved, etc is intentional. We learned how to use this to portray different emotions and ideas.

I worked in a group with my peers; we had to create a short film using the different camera movements we learned. We created a storyboard to reflect what we planned the film to look like. It described what was happening in each individual scene and why we used the movement we made. There was a total of six different movements used to show our understanding of the camera’s movements. We had also taken pictures of inanimate objects to create a story of our own. We used different camera angles and shots to tell the story. In both of these projects every group member brought their own ideas, took part in front and behind the camera. It was a great experience that really helped us understand the purpose of what we learned.

Throughout the process of creating the project we had a few challenges that had our group take a step back when planning out the storyline. First we had to create a story that would accurately involve emotions most commonly used in the camera angles and camera shots learned. Then we also had to understand the concept of different camera positions when using them to benefit the scenes. In the video we filmed, the angles we used had to be purposeful , have meaning behind it. Sometimes a camera shot seemed like the simplest answer however we often found ourselves redoing scenes to fully capture the idea we want to perceive.

The entire process of planning, filming, and placing clips together was a learning experience. I used what I had learned about the purpose of different camera shots and angles. I learned how to combine an angle with a type of camera shot to enhance the meaning of a scene. When completing the project it was important to remember to portray a purposeful story.

In future projects I will focus more on using multiple techniques in one scene. Having a variety of camera movements directs and engages the viewer.
